After 44 years, The Doobie Brothers are making another full-length album with singer Michael McDonald. This is what guitarist and singer Patrick Simmons of the band tells music magazine Billboard. McDonald returned to his old group in 2019 after decades.
McDonald joined The Doobie Brothers in 1975 and can be heard on hits such as What a Fool Believes in Minute by Minute. After the album One Step Closer The band split up in 1980. They reunited in the old lineup in 1989, before McDonald joined them.
The 72-year-old singer returned in 2019 for a tour in honor of the band’s fiftieth anniversary. The reunion on stage encouraged the group to return to the studio. “At one point I said, we’re doing all these shows, it makes sense to make an album. I think people would think that’s really cool,” says Simmons.
The artist does not mention a date, but does say that the songs are “finished”. The Doobie Brothers’ last studio album, without McDonald, was released in 2021.
