The Dominicans collect aid to send to the victims

This Thursday, several community organizations in Upper Manhattan began collecting supplies to donate to victims of Hurricane Fiona in the Dominican Republic. An initiative that takes place at the 809 Lounge in Inwood.

“Our Dominican brothers, our Dominican families are in need at this moment and we extend our hand as a sign of solidarity”, said Cirilo Monronta, president of the 809 foundation.

And it is that the passage of Hurricane Fiona caused a lot of damage in both Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Six deaths have been reported so far, four in Isla del Encanto and two in Quisqueya.

This is due to the rains and strong winds that caused floods and landslides, leaving many with nothing.

In response to this catastrophe that has strongly affected the eastern region of the Dominican Republic, in particular Higuey, La Romana, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, among other sectors, the Foundations 809, AIB and the Altagracianos USA Committee (CAUSA) have met to collect essential items.

Volunteers.

“The houses, the families who have lost everything, are left with nothing, only the mud floor, because the water has dragged away, has taken everything and there are many, many families who are in need now,” added Monronta.

Among the most necessary items are: canned food, powdered milk, diapers, towels, sheets, mosquito nets, clothes and shoes for children and adults, among others.

Piraeus Soliman, a deputy from the province of Altagracia, told us in a video call that the victims are eagerly awaiting this help.

“To be able to bring quality of life and resolve the situation to a group of people who are now homeless,” Deputy Soliman said.

He added that they still don’t have an exact number of homes that have been flooded and that the government is currently assessing the damage.

In addition to supplies, these organizations need volunteers.

“It is very important because there are a lot of people working and therefore we have several people who can work shifts as we will be open from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon,” said Michael Peralta, president of the Altagracianos USA Committee (CAUSE).

If you want to contribute to this cause, these organizations are collecting donations this Thursday through October 14 from nine in the morning until six in the afternoon.
