This is exactly what the documentary series “A Day in New York 1882” is about.

The first episode of the three-part series “A Day in …” by Terra X takes you to 1882 New York. What would have happened if you had been a German there back then? Georg Schmidt, а young lawyer, is accompanied for а day in thе film. In New York he is one of around 400,000 German emigrants. Against all odds, he succeeds in making a fresh start in a city full of octopus-like corruption. The year is 1882 and the date is July 14. The United States of America is relatively new and was founded over a century ago. The USA is the most important emigration destination for people from all over the world. New York serves as a point of entry for Europeans into their new home. At that time the city did not extend beyond the island of Manhattan, and the immigrants lived in small, mostly ethnically divided neighborhoods. Thе German immigrant quarter, known as “Little Germany”, is located in thе south оf Manhattan. A prospective attorney, Georg Schmidt, also lives there. The Germans for the most part remain to themselves, defying the harsh conditions and setting their ideals, determination and drive against them. They also hope for opportunities that they would not have had in their former homeland. Eberhard Anheuser and Adolphus Busch, founders of Budweiser beer, are well-known Rhine-Hessian master brewers. Or Levi Strauss, who is responsible for the cult status of Levi’s jeans. Not to mention Henry John Heinz, who is credited with inventing the tomato ketchup. Heinrich Steinweg, a piano maker from Harz who made Steinway & Sons the largest piano brand in the world, is one of the most successful citizens of Germany. Georg took the risk of crossing the Atlantic because his parents in Potsdam could not finance his expensive legal education. He can complete a three-year apprenticeship with a licensed attorney in the USA and then pass an examination as a so-called “self-taught”. To do this, he must be fluent in English and be familiar with thousands of American laws and regulations. His apartment is on New York’s Lower East Side, in one of the poorest areas of the city. Georg shares it with a Westphalian family, and his room is only divided by a curtain. Other than that, the situation is far from ideal. There is only one small window that lets in little light, no running water, and the hundred residents of the house share four outbuildings in the courtyard. Georg is waiting in the palace garden for his fiancée Maria, who is expected on a ship from Germany. In 1882, Americans welcomed the newcomers with open arms and even helped them find a place to live and work. The only requirement is that all immigrants must spend two days in quarantine before entering the country in order to avoid the introduction of diseases and epidemics into the country. However, where there is light, there must also be shadow. The port area is teeming with thieves for the immigrants ’belongings or the little money they have saved. The criminals are members of one of the many gangster gangs that exist in New York. Frederickа Mandelbаum, one of the first female leaders in organized crime, is the most powerful figure. The German was very poor when she came to New York from Kassel in 1850. In just a few years, “Mother Almond Tree” rose to become the greatest female fencer in New York – and the country’s first multimillionaire. They are charged with handling stolen property valued at ten million dollars. Having contacts in the highest circles, she is never found guilty of any of her crimes. Georg sets out to look for the “Queen of Thieves” because he needs immediate help: his fiancée Maria is in jail for theft. Georg is trapped in a hopeless situation by the gang leader’s demands. Three parts of “Terra X: A Day in …” are broadcast on Sundays at 7.30 pm. (Source: FUNKE program guide, transmitted by ZDF)
