For certain categories of citizens, the Omicron coronavirus strain poses an increased danger. Due to its circulation mortality among those infected with COVOD-19 may increase.
How told in the exclusive OBOZREVATEL blitz interview, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases of the Bogomolets National Medical University Sergey Kramarev, Ukraine should already begin to prepare for a meeting with the strain… According to the specialist, vaccination should be intensified and air traffic should be closed “with the whole world, or at least with the African continent.”
Kramarev noted that the virus mutated and he may be more dangerous than the Delta strain.
“He has much more mutations in the S-segment. If Delta has two, then this one has more than 30. He can be more infectious and, most importantly, he can get away from antibodies, both post-vaccination and those formed after the disease. There is a threat.” , – said the expert.
Speaking from the one who is most at risk with the arrival of this type of coronavirus on our territory, the scientist said that all the same categories of citizens are most at risk of infection as during outbreaks of previous strains. We are talking about people aged 60+, with diabetes, obesity, cancer, and other chronic ailments.
The doctor noted that according to preliminary data, Omicron is no more aggressive than Delta, but if a large number of people become ill, mortality will also increase.
“These are directly proportional indicators: the more they get sick, the more they die. Therefore, of course, mortality may increase not because of the aggressiveness of the strain, but because it is more infectious and more people will get sick,” the specialist explained.
He also stressed that vaccination remains the main method of combating the spread of coronavirus.
“It is also necessary to vaccinate people from risk groups with the third dose,” the doctor added.
As OBOZREVATEL reported, WHO named a way to stop the spread of the Omicron strain.
