The “Do you know” of the day. Do you know how the Lycée Loritz was a first in France?

“To prepare educated and modern men who do not blush from the vice, the counter and the plow”: this was Henri Loritz’s project when he created his establishment in 1844, in Nancy.

Its initial name is the “Callot boarding school” and it is the “first secular professional establishment in France”, recalls the work devoted to the high school for the 175 years of its creation.

The first premises are located rue du Tapis-Vert. The boarding school quickly became successful, even if it was economically managed by Henri Loritz, a passionate former teacher, and his wife. The establishment is quickly noticed by the rectorate and is the subject of correspondence with the Minister of National Education.

A founder who died prematurely

Mechanics, founders, fitters, farmers or traders, the 150 or so students are between twelve and twenty years old. Upon graduation, this initial training enables them to successfully pass the major public competitions.

France will not decide on the establishment of an organized vocational education until 1865. But Henri Loritz will not know this development: he who passed the hand at the head of the boarding school, died on August 30 of that same year 1865. , in Saint-Max. He was 50 years old.

The high school, which now has around 2,000 students, will take the name of its founder in 1966.
