The “do you know” of the day. Do you know how much an Émile Gallé vase sold in New York?

In December 2018, in New York, there were therefore some exceptional pieces, such as a vase created by Gallé on September 9, 1899, the day of Dreyfus’ conviction.

“Gallé, convinced Dreyfusard, was furious, and immediately designed this dark room, where the plants seem to be caught in a storm, enriched with a quote from Isaiah: ‘The Lord will germinate justice and ‘honor among all nations ””, explained François Le Tacon, a fine connoisseur of the work of the glassmaker from Nancy. The sale was estimated, in total, at the dizzying sum of 4 or 5 million euros.

Buyers were generally interested in a lily vase, the amount of which confirms this enthusiasm: it was won at € 393,000. In total, this auction amounted to € 2.41 million. And yet, half of the pieces had not found a buyer. “What we could fear by putting so much on the market at once”, testified, after the fact, François Le Tacon.
