Omroep MAX will soon broadcast a documentary series about cancel culture. The series was made by BNNVARA, but it has since withdrawn. The broadcaster itself turned out to be the subject of the series.
In the four episodes of The DIY Dictatorship Fidan Ekiz and Kees Schaap look for the relationship between the cancel culture and the increased polarization.
The presenters address the question of why people with dissenting opinions and deviant behavior are publicly condemned and excluded. In the first episode, former PvdA Member of Parliament Gijs van Dijk, among others, speaks.
According to the BNNVARA spokesperson, the director of the series sent a funny Christmas gift to the broadcaster’s final responsible during the making process. It contained, among other things, a box of chocolate kisses with an image of someone with a face painted black, also known as blackface.
The recipient thought it was an unsavory joke and told the director in a conversation. The maker then incorporated the joke and his interpretation of the reaction into the series. “However, the way in which he had incorporated this into the series was one-sided and we did not think it was right to classify this conversation as cancelling. We therefore did not want to broadcast it under our own banner in this way.”
‘Important to highlight multiple sides of a story’
After BNNVARA withdrew, broadcaster Jan Slager wanted the documentary. “It is now clear that I am not a fan of the current woke and cancel culture. I have regularly spoken out against it, as far as I am concerned we are going too far. A story always has several sides and it is important to highlight them” Butcher says.
When MAX was approached for the documentary, the broadcaster accepted. “Emphasily in close consultation with the management of BNNVARA”, Slagter emphasizes.
The DIY Dictatorship can be seen from Thursday on streaming platform NPO Start. It is not yet known when the series will be broadcast on television.
