The division of roles in the interim board will not be the same as it was before, when the chairman of the board, Herbert Lauchstein, had the decisive voice in making important decisions. The two members of the temporary board will henceforth be equal in their rights and make decisions collegially.
The temporary board of SIA “Liepājas teatris” was appointed at the moment when work on the preparation of the next year’s budget of the cultural institution should begin – with the aim of ensuring that the theater, after several years of work with large losses, which reached less than 72 thousand euros last year, so to speak, “slips through the cracks” “.

“I will not hide that this has been the goal of the Liepāja theater management every year until now, we have also gone for it and we have prepared such a budget. However, we all know very well that in previous years, not only Liepaja and Latvia, but also on a wider scale, were affected by various events – like the covid pandemic, like the war in Ukraine, which affected the market situation accordingly,” notes Eva Ciekurze, temporary board member of SIA “Liepājas teatris”.
This season’s repertoire changes will not be affected by the management of the theater, as the current chairman of the board, Herberts Laukštein, had managed to develop them already in the summer.

“The division of roles between me and the other member of the board, Timur Thomson, will not be the same as it was between Herbert and me before. I will be more in charge of day-to-day issues, and he will connect at the strategic and document level,” says Ciekurze.
Both Ciekurze and Laukšteins have already publicly expressed their readiness to participate in the competition for theater board members. “Anyway, if Herbert [Laukšteins] would win the competition, it would be one of the best options, because what he has created during his reign is the most optimal option in the case of Liepāja theatre,” says theater critic Normunds Akots.
On the other hand, the director Elmārs Senkovs expresses: “Here I have only one question – and, in my opinion, an important question: will the result after the competition be very satisfactory for the troupe? At the moment, I have not heard that an artistic director is needed on request, I do not currently see in the theater industry, who could be the manager of this theater. I assume that the troupe of actors themselves cannot see at the moment either.”
Director Laura Groza expresses sympathy: “It’s terrible, I don’t envy their current daily life, when they really have to go on the same stage and work together – I can’t model such a situation in my reality.”
The conflict in the Liepāja theater boiled over when part of the troupe demanded Laukštein’s resignation, otherwise refusing to go on stage. The municipality will announce an open competition for the positions of theater board members in the near future.
