“The audience is very different,” the director, artistic director of the Latvian National Theater Elmārs Senkovs said in the TV24 program “On the Line” in response to the question of how you assess the quality of Latvian theater art in general, what the audience is used to in Latvia at the moment.
He emphasizes that the audience cannot be evaluated as a whole, because they are very different: “Every theater has a different audience.”
Senkov points out that there are those who choose to go to one particular theater, there are some theater lovers who watch all the performances in different theaters.
Speaking about the audience of the Latvian National Theater, he says that the audience of this theater is very open-minded and has seen a lot of different works, which cannot be intimidated by anything.
The director admits that, of course, you have to think about quality: “We are a professional theater, a big theater, and we cannot allow any kind of sloppiness. And that’s why I think very scrupulously about invited directors who can be relied on. And those whom I have invited, I know that they do their work with quality.”
However, he believes that young directors should also be given a chance, for whom something may not work out, but that’s normal. Sometimes a new director can achieve a quality that some good seasoned director can’t: “You can never predict that.”
