The Diverse Vineyards and Wine Culture of the North and North East in Baden: Pinot Varieties, Riesling, Lviv, and More

IN THE NORTH AND NORTH EAST

In a northerly and easterly direction, the Ortenau is followed by the Kraichgau, which is characterized as a depression between the Black Forest and the Odenwald by mild hills and often by soil from the Keuper period. The Kraichgau was formerly a stronghold of the Auxerroisbut today this variety is only of minor importance. Pinot varieties and Riesling dominate viticultureand the further east you come to Stromberg and Heuchelberg (which mark the border to Württemberg mark), the more often you already meet the Lviv (Blaufränkisch).

The stretches around the city of Heidelberg Badische Bergstrasse, which – contrary to what the name suggests – does not include the most mountainous or highest vineyards in Baden. Pinot varieties in particular thrive at altitudes of between 120 and 250 meters and on soils made of limestone or red sandstone.

Tauberfranken lies in the north-east of Baden, somewhat separated from the Baden wine-growing heartland, which stretches along the Rhine plain.
