The Districts: Great American Painting (Kritik & Stream)

There are bands that hit the music world like comets. And then there are those who aren’t exactly heading for the planet Pop at the speed of light. The latter certainly include The Districts from Pennsylvania, who have been around since 2009 and who have slowly reached the perfect degree of maturity on their new album GREAT AMERICAN PAINTING in its twelfth year of existence.

Musically, the trio around guitarist and singer Rob Grote can be settled between rock, 90s emocore and sugary indie pop; Above all, the sophisticated songwriting and the well thought-out arrangements show that the gentlemen have not only been making music since yesterday. With “No Blood”, which is heavily influenced by the Shins, they have achieved a real hit, and in Corona times everyone can blindly sign the refrain of the song: “Cause there’s no fun / Left in this town,” sings Grote.

There are also more rocky pieces like “Long End” or the electro-pop “I Want To Feel It All”. If the Districts are looking for GREAT AMERICAN PAINTING in the title, the “bigger picture” of contemporary USA, you can clearly hear it in their sound: All US rock and pop traditions of recent years are practiced here in a convincing manner.
