We have all made the mistake at least once of using the words “brain” and “mind” with the same meaning, but it is discovered and analyzed by researchers that the two are totally distinct. What differentiates them?
To begin with, let’s find out what the brain is and what the mind is according to studies:
The BRAIN is the organ located inside our skull that regulates all the physical functions of the human body. It is a vital part of our central nervous system (CNS) that serves as the center for collecting, organizing and disseminating information throughout the body. Most of the organs of our body are under its control.
MIND is a concept that has been debated and explored by scholars, scientists and theologians for centuries. The agreed definition of mind is that it is the complex network of thought processes and consciousness that arises from the neurological activity of the brain. We can divide our mind into three layers: conscious, unconscious and subconscious.
At its simplest, the mind refers to our ability to think, feel and take part in physical activity. The brain, on the other hand, refers to the physical organ in our head that supports these functions.
Here are three key differences between the two:
The brain is composed of neurons and blood vessels; on the other hand, the mind is abstract and not made up of neurons or blood vessels. The brain controls a person’s movements, emotions, and various body functions; mind alludes to a person’s morality, reasoning, and understanding. The brain is a physical organ; can be touched or seen; however, the mind is intangible; it can neither be touched nor seen.
Diseases of the brain vs. disorders of the mind
The brain can develop diseases and disorders and suffer trauma, all of which are easily diagnosed. The same cannot be said for the mind, a change in the mind cannot be labeled a “disease” because it is not observable with an X-ray, MRI or a regular medical history. In these cases, we refer to psychological disorders.
Any disease, brain problem or change in neurotransmitters affects mental health.
An example of this is serotonin deficiency, which would affect mood. However, this can be reversed if we take care of our mental focus and go to therapy because the mind also changes the brain.
The brain controls physiology –» The mind controls what you think and feel
The brain acts as a building, while the mind is the entity that animates, decorates and inhabits it. Thus, while the brain structures every physiological process, the mind is the intangible expression of every thought, emotion, processed experience, constructed belief, or fear.
Despite these things, both dimensions are interconnected and, to understand them, it is impossible to separate one from the other. Brain without mind would be null for any being.
