More and more young people receive a shocking verdict. They are diagnosed with a neuropsychiatric disease for which no cure has yet been found.

Multiple sclerosis occurs around the age of 20. The causes are linked to lifestyle, but also to the genetic heritage.

And in Romania today only four out of ten sick people receive aid from the state. Too few treatments are solved. And we are not yet talking about modern techniques, as happens abroad.

What is multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune inflammatory condition of the central nervous system represented by the spinal cord and cerebral cortex, which can cause permanent motor disability by damaging nerve fibers linked to different muscle groups.

Possible causes of the disease

– It most frequently affects young people between 20 and 40 years of age;

– Gender: females are more frequently affected than males;

– Family history: having a family history increases the risk of developing the disease

– Epstein Barr viral infections;

– Low levels of vitamin D;

– The existence of some autoimmune diseases: pernicious anemia, psoriasis, type I diabetes.

What are the symptoms of the disease?

The clinical picture in the case of multiple sclerosis often consists of the following symptoms:

– Feeling of numbness or tingling in the extremities and trunk on the same side;

– facial paraesthesia, facial paresis;

– Stiffness of the cervical muscles;

– Tremors in the hands and lack of coordination of movements;

– Visual impairment includes: partial or complete loss of vision (usually unilateral), double or blurred vision;

– Speech difficulties;

– Dysfunctions of sexual, bladder or intestinal motility.

Types of multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis can be classified according to the evolution of symptoms into the following types:

– relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis MSRR – the most common form of multiple sclerosis in women over the age of 30;

– Primary progressive multiple sclerosis MSPP – affects both sexes equally and occurs mainly in the spinal cord;

– Secondary progressive multiple sclerosis MSPS – appears after a long period of evolution of the RRMS;

– Relapsing progressive multiple sclerosis SMPR – the most severe type of disease evolution.

Multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune condition

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects around 10,000 people in Romania. The disease mainly affects young people, aged between 20 and 40 years, being considered the most disabling disease of young adults and affects about three times more women than men.

“Multiple sclerosis is a complex condition and the symptoms of this disease impose lifestyle restrictions, can affect quality of life, especially in young patients, and can lead to depression, anxiety, fear of loneliness, permanent disability or loss of family. .

That is why this disease must be addressed in a multidisciplinary way and the collaboration between doctor, family, psychologist and physiotherapist can lead to a visible improvement in the quality of life of patients “, said Rozalina Lăpădatu, president of the Association of Patients with Autoimmune Diseases.
