“If the first cases of Omicron in Bulgaria are a week ago, it will take 3-4 weeks to reach peak values.” Angelique Cutzi, the doctor from the Republic of South Africa, who discovered the variant of COVID-19, which currently dominates in a large part of the world, predicted this in an interview for the BNT program “Speak Now”.
According to her, the clinical symptoms are much milder, Omicron-infected patients do not need oxygen therapy. “If you are vaccinated, even if you have a chronic illness or are overweight, you will probably be much easier if you are infected with Omicron,” she added. However, those who have been vaccinated are much more likely to go to hospital for intensive care.
Typical symptoms of Omicron are hot or cold flushes, headache, back or chest pain, feeling tired and exhausted, a mild sore throat or cough.
According to her, the most important thing for the severity of the wave in our country will be how many people will end up in intensive care units, as well as what the mortality rate will be. Kutzi believes that there could be bigger problems in Bulgaria if there are many people over 50-60 who have not been vaccinated.
The doctor reassures that even if there is a high percentage of infected people, we should not be afraid, and the best prevention is wearing masks, vaccinations and social distance. She recommends that even the most vulnerable people stay away from large crowds of people.
The discoverer of omicron believes that the virus is very likely to become endemic because it is not in its interest to kill everyone. She is also convinced that another big problem in the current situation is panic, including because of the frightening speech of politicians.
Angelique Cutzi says that when she discovered Omicron, she was just doing her job, she knew what was going on, and when she came across something different, she did her duty to share it right away.
