The Disarmament of Oviedo returns with a new edition. Declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest in 2018, chickpeas with cod, tripe and rice pudding become common at the tables of participating venues from next Thursday 14 to Tuesday 19 October. The president of Otea Oviedo, David González Codón, explained in the microphones of BE Gijón that 60 establishments have signed up for the Gastronomic Days of Disarmament, although the big day is the 19th when the number of restaurants multiplies by five and more than 10,000 menus are served. “The appointment has been consolidated and we seek that it has more and more importance not only in Asturias, but in the north of Spain,” he pointed out.
The Disarmament festival is a tradition whose origin dates back to the 19th century. “It is a menu of peace between Elizabethan and Carlists. Use food as a means so that the war does not end. Ultimately, thanks to food we managed to end up allying two enemy sides. This is what the menu intends to convey”, González Codon recalled.
“We have a potential that was a bit unknown. We all remember our parents eating the menu, but it needed this push that it has received from Otea and the Brotherhood and we want it to become a national event in a very short time,” he said and is that in 2012 the Brotherhood of Disarmament whose objective is to defend, spread and protect the gastronomic custom. And what do you do after the menu? Legend has it that the ‘unarmed’ (that is, the diners) can consummate the celebration with a nap.
Bites of Disarmament
However, and for Disarmament to reach the whole world, for 12 days the Bites of Disarmament, an event in which 34 locals participate offering citizens and visitors pinchos or tapas that have as a condition to carry some of the ingredients on the menu. “It is about democratizing the Disarmament menu, making it more accessible in other places and helping everyone to get to know it,” said Codon.
On the website itself you can download the gastromapa and enjoy the different proposals of the locals from Oviedo. Another formula that is gaining followers, not only in the capital but also from people who come from other parts of Asturias.
