The silver of the seas – the large schools of herring – has become rare in the Baltic Sea. This has a lot to do with copepod crabs – and climate change. For professional fishermen it means the downfall.

As early as December, the first females leave their winter quarters in the resund and swarm south through the Baltic Sea. The spawning herring arrive early, their destination is the seagrass meadows and spawning herbs in the Bay of Greifswald, where they lay their eggs. The Bodden, 500 square kilometers in size, is the perfect nursery for the Atlantic herring subspecies: the shallow basin, shaped like a pan, offers Clupea harengus protection from wind, waves and predators.
