In Russia, affordable wine from Italy, Spain and France is disappearing every day due to increased import duties. The Fort wine trading company spoke about this.
“In the segment “up to 500-700 rubles” there will soon be almost no wine imports left from the main countries – Italy, Spain, France!” — RIA Novosti reports the words of Fort executive director Alexander Lipilin. He added that this is affected by the increase in import duties. While more expensive segments have less demand and widespread competition from imports, Lipilin emphasized.
Fort import director Daria Sologub believes that budget wines from Italy, Spain and France will be replaced by wines from Chile, Argentina and South Africa. For Chile, which is already one of the five largest suppliers of wines to Russia, this will be an additional incentive to promote its products. South Africa also has inexpensive wine options and convenient delivery logistics, making them attractive to consumers, Sologub concluded.
Alcohol importers appealed to the Russian government due to a possible increase import duties for wine. Increasing duties could lead to higher prices for winemakers and a deterioration in the quality of local wines due to lack of competition. As a result, consumers may switch to another type of alcohol.
