For 40 years, the disappearance case of the “Vatican girl” Emanuela Orlandi has marked the Italian consciousness, with theories dealing with everything from the mafia to terrorists.
Last autumn, the documentary series “Vatican Girl” breathed new life into the interest surrounding the mystery, and the following January, the Vatican State declared that it would reopen the investigation into the case.

Last Monday, the Italian news channel La7 also published a special report which dealt with the case documents the Vatican State had recently handed over to the prosecution authorities in Rome.
Now details from the documents are attracting attention, and the “Vatican Girl’s” family is reacting strongly to the press’s coverage of the content.

“Explosive” revelation
Overlooked suspect
In La7’s report it appears accordingly CNN that the documents shine a spotlight on Emanuela’s married uncle.
This is the Emanuela case:

– The theories about what may have happened to Orlandi include allegations aimed at both mafia connections in the Vatican, and Orlandi’s own family, among other things.

In a correspondence between Agostino Casaroli, who was Cardinal Secretary of State for Vatican City at the time of Emanuela’s disappearance, and the Orlandi family’s “spiritual guide”, the uncle allegedly sexually harassed Emanuela’s older sister.
According to CNN, this should have directed suspicion towards the uncle as a possible suspect in the case, which was overlooked by the authorities.

However, these claims were strongly opposed by Emanuela’s brother, Pietro Orlandi, who CNN says has dedicated his life to the case of his sister’s disappearance.
– By the way, my uncle was 200 kilometers away on a family holiday, and came straight to Rome when my father called him that afternoon – this is something the prosecutors knew very well about, because everything has been in the documents for 40 years, Orlandi is said to have written on his Facebook account after the report, according to CNN.

On 13 July, also on Facebook, he comes out harshly against La7, whom he accuses of dishonoring the family.
– They claimed that my uncle, after receiving a call from my father around midnight, could have returned from the holiday earlier, done God knows what to Emanuela (only these journalists can know), escaped back to the holiday again, and waited on being called by my father again and then going to Rome to help, writes Orlandi, before adding sourly:

The sister Natalina Orlandi, who accused the uncle of sexual harassment, has also told the press that although she does not think well of the now deceased uncle, she still believes that he was not involved in Emanuela’s disappearance.
– I hope that these are not the only documents, which are in no way new, that the Vatican prosecutor’s office has handed over to the prosecutor’s office in Rome, said the older sister.
