Where is the dirtiest place on an airplane? It’s easy to think of the inside of the bathroom first, but the flight attendants’ answers were different.
On the 26th (local time), the New York Post, citing the travel magazine ‘Travel + Leisure’, revealed ‘the dirtiest spaces on an airplane as chosen by flight attendants.’
The first ‘dirty space’ chosen by the flight attendants was the luggage compartment above the seats. “The overhead bins are touched by many passengers but are rarely cleaned,” said Josephine Limo, a flight attendant and travel blogger. He advised passengers, “It is a good idea to wipe the handles before opening the home compartment and wash your hands thoroughly after loading and unloading luggage.”
Rimo pointed out that the safety instructions in the front seat pocket were also dirty. A safety guide is a thin booklet that contains information on what to do in an emergency situation. In general, passengers are advised to read these guidelines, but hygiene management is not thorough. “It’s probably the dirtiest part of the plane,” Limo said, adding that it’s a good idea to sanitize your hands before and after touching the instructions.
The bathroom door handle and lock were also selected as ‘dirty places.’ “While the interior of the bathroom is cleaned regularly, the locks and handles are not,” Rimo said.
Flight attendants agreed that the folding tables that passengers used to eat were also dirty. One flight attendant said, “Some parents use this table when changing their children’s diapers.” “Passengers expect the plane to be unclean,” said Sue Fogwell, another flight attendant. “But the germs on the table will be far beyond the normal level.” He went on to recommend, “It is a good idea to wipe down or disinfect the table yourself before eating or lying down for a nap.”
Fogwell said the seat covers were also dirty. “The seat covers that passengers have to sit on for hours are also unsanitary,” he said. “Many people vomit or get hurt on board the plane. “But soiled covers are not always replaced or cleaned.” He said, “Flights can be delayed, so even when such incidents occur, they are often overlooked.”
