The Dirtiest Item in a Hotel Room: TV Remote – Tips for a Clean Stay

Bandung – It turns out that the TV remote can be the dirtiest item when detikers stay at a hotel. Reporting from the Travel and Culture Expert Column, the TV remote is the right place for germs to live.

The reason is, the TV remote often changes hands from one hotel guest to another. Guests also generally use it spontaneously. They just hold and press the button when they want to watch a TV broadcast.

They rarely wash their hands first or have the awareness to clean the remote. In fact, there are also those who use the remote while eating a snack or after using the bathroom.

Doctor Claire Bird, an environmental microbiology specialist at the Healthy Hotels Program, said measuring the levels of biological residue in hotel remotes convinced her that remotes in hotel rooms were not being cleaned properly, and that it was likely a guest would have contracted an infection from a previous sick visitor.

“If they have a stomach ache and don’t wash their hands, or they have a cold or flu and pick up the remote after blowing their nose a few times, the viruses on the remote can infect you when you turn on the television there,” he said as quoted by the News. com.au.

Therefore, if a traveler stays at a hotel, it is recommended to clean the TV remote first before using it, such as disinfecting or sanitizing it to kill any germs.
