The Diocese of Brooklyn creates an office of protection for children and adolescents as part of its commitment to provide a safer environment

The Diocese of Brooklyn created a new Office for the Protection of Children and Young People as part of its commitment to improving protocols and providing a safe environment.

The director of this office will be Jasmine Salazar, who is currently the Victim Assistance Coordinator and Vice Chancellor of the Diocese. Salazar will be responsible for tracking all allegations of misconduct and ensuring their referral to the Diocesan Review Board for investigation. In addition to tracking the progress and results of those investigations.

Salazar will serve as liaison with the New York City Police Department’s Special Victims Unit and will oversee the 1722 Supervisor, who will be central in monitoring priests who have been removed from ministry for any allegation of abuse.

“The work as the Victim Assistance Coordinator has been challenging and deeply satisfying. Being able to work with those who are survivors of abuse and accompany them on their journey has been a true honor and privilege. This new role will allow me to continue this work and collaborate with other committed people who seek to bring hope and healing to the faithful, ”said Salazar, who has been Victim Assistance Coordinator since 2013.

This office will oversee the Safe Environment Office, the Office of the Ministry of Victim Assistance and the 1722 Supervisor.

Salazar’s new role took effect on November 5, 2021.
