“We’ve only managed to put astronauts on the moon six times so far. This landing on the moon occurred over a three-year period between 1969 and 1972 and was part of a series of space missions known as the Apollo missions,” said Ian Whittaker, Senior Lecturer in Physics, University of Nottingham Trent. Space, Monday (3/1).
The type of rocket used to take astronauts to the moon was the very powerful Saturn V. Meanwhile, the Saturn V is no longer being produced.
“Which means, right now, we don’t have a rocket powerful enough to get a human to the moon—let alone build a space station there,” Whittaker said.
Now powerful rockets are being built again. Space exploration company SpaceX created a newer and larger rocket capable of carrying the weight of an astronaut to the moon. NASA is also planning a new mission to take astronauts to the moon.
However, there is a big difference between a short trip and building a space station on the moon, which is very difficult. Building a space station is very difficult. Astronauts had to take the fragments from the station to the moon and assemble them there.
The International Space Station is only 400 km from the Earth’s surface, while the distance from Earth to the Moon is 384 thousand km. Each trip to the moon would take about three days and would require an incredible amount of fuel, potentially adding to Earth’s climate problems.
