In her column, Yolanthe shares her experiences as a single mother and career woman in Los Angeles. This time writes the Ooh, I’m growing!star about the differences between schools in the Netherlands and America. Although her son has never participated in school in the Netherlands, Yolanthe notices that a lot of attention is paid to exercise in America. ‘I think that the alternation between sports and normal lessons is good for concentration. During the sports lessons you can lose some energy and then you have full focus again for the maths lesson,’ she concludes.
Yolanthe also sees that it has a positive effect on the relationship Xess has with his friends: ‘You get to know each other better when you play a game than during language lessons (…) Xess beams when he comes home from school. This makes me the happiest mother in the world.’
But the biggest difference between the Netherlands and America, she says, is that the children in LA go to school in uniform. ‘Children don’t judge each other on the basis of clothing, because it is the same for everyone. I think that has something to it’, Yolanthe continues.
For a change, there is also a regular ‘free clothing day’, where the kids go to school in an outfit of their own choice. And three guesses what Xess prefers to wear: a football outfit, just like his father. The 7-year-old dreams of spending his days on the football field later. “I want to be a professional football player when I grow up,” he tells his mother, Yolanthe shares in her column.
