The dictator of Nicaragua says that the assault on the Mexican embassy in Ecuador “is inadmissible” – 2024-04-19 07:57:44

Daniel Ortega, dictator of Nicaragua.

The president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortegasaid this Tuesday before Celac that the assault on the Mexican embassy in Ecuador “has no precedent” and that it is “inadmissible” for a government in the region to act in that way. “staining the national sovereignty of another Latin American country”.

Ortega sent this message – read virtually by the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister, Denis Moncada Colindres – at the summit convened by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) to analyze the situation generated by the police assault on the headquarters of the Mexican embassy in Quito, to capture former vice president Jorge Glas, convicted of corruption.

“Nicaragua reaffirms its condemnation, denunciation, rejection and repudiation of the crime committed by the Government of Ecuador, a neo-fascist, neo-colonialist act of imperial dictation, against the sovereignty and national dignity of the brother people and Government of Mexico”said the Nicaraguan president.

Ortega recalled that his Government, “upon learning of these reprehensible acts that have no precedent, nor can they set a precedent,” issued an official statement in which it repudiated “that crime and reported the breaking of all diplomatic relations with the Government of Ecuador.”

“Also our State, in the midst of a sovereign act, has said that our decision is against that irresponsible Government and not against the noble Ecuadorian people to whom we reiterate our affection, support and solidarity,” he added.

Ortega: Ecuador lent itself to imperial interests

The Nicaraguan president observed that the main objective of Celac, since its founding in 2010, is to promote the integration, cooperation and development of its people, as well as to be a mechanism for political dialogue, for which he reaffirmed that “the actions of the Government of Ecuador violates International Law.

“It has become a transgressive Government, by disrespecting and failing to comply with the obligations regarding privileges and immunities of diplomats, established in the Vienna Convention, lending itself to imperial interests to prevent the consolidation of Celac,” he indicated.

Ortega maintained in this sense that “it is inadmissible for a Government of our region and our organization to act in this way, staining the national sovereignty of another Latin American country, breaking the international instruments on the historic Right of Asylum, incurring in violation of International Law in its integrality.

“We have seen with dismay, through videos, how unusual barbarism and violence tainted Mexican sovereignty,” he highlighted.

Nicaragua supports Mexico in lawsuit before the ICJ

In his message, Ortega stated that “Nicaragua supports and supports the decision of the Government of Mexico to present on April 11, 2024 before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) the lawsuit for the flagrant violations incurred by the Government of Ecuador in against the Mexican Embassy in that country and its diplomatic staff on the night of Friday, April 5, 2024.

«These despicable acts of violence and harassment committed against its personnel constitute irreparable damage to Mexican dignity and the principles and foundations of the international system as a whole that we all defend. “The Ecuadorian Government harmed the spirit, principles and reason for being of Celac,” he insisted.

The Sandinista leader reiterated that “Nicaragua firmly and determinedly condemns this serious act by the Government of Ecuador, violating International Law, the sovereignty of Mexico and the inviolability of the Embassies and diplomatic premises, their personnel and the historic Right of Asylum.”

Nicaraguan opponents in exile have called Ortega “brazen” and “cynical” for breaking relations with Ecuador after the police raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, which culminated in the arrest of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas, when his government has expropriated the offices of the OAS and those of Taiwan in Managua, and consented to attacks with stones and mortars on the US diplomatic headquarters.
