The Dg of Taxes visits Gicam

Roger Athanase Meyong

Appointed head of the Directorate General of Taxes on March 20, 2023 by a presidential decree to replace Modeste Mopa Fatoing, Roger Athanase Meyong will make his first official outing as the new head of the Cameroonian tax administration this Friday, June 2, 2023. On the occasion, he will pay a visit to the headquarters of the Groupement Inter-patronal du Cameroun (Gicam) in Douala, the employers said on their Twitter account on Wednesday.

He will be received by the president of Gicam, Célestin Tawamba, and the two men will thus meet for the second time since the appointment of Roger Athanase Meyong. On April 27, a Gicam delegation led by its boss was received in audience by the new DG of taxes in Yaoundé. It was then a contact between the tax administration and employers during which the concerns and expectations of employers in terms of taxation were brought to the attention of the DGI.

« It is in favor of this common desire to improve the business climate in Cameroon that the DGI Mr. Roger Athanase Meyong agreed to meet with GICAM prior to the budget framework for the year 2024. “, had then specified the GICAM at the end of this hearing.

This Friday, June 2, Roger Athanase Meyong will return the courtesy to businessmen. This approach contributes to a strengthening of relations, which have remained quirky between the two institutions over the past three years, under the era of Modeste Mopa.

Conflicting relations between the tax authorities and the business community were further fueled by an ever-increasing number of tax disputes, with taxpayers regularly complaining of being victims of abusive tax adjustments. This gave rise to disputes with the competent authorities, in particular the DGI itself, but especially with the appeals committee housed at the Ministry of Finance. Over the past few years, an average of 800 cases per year have been the subject of reforms at the level of first degree litigation with the two bodies.

The Inter-employer Grouping of Cameroon (Gicam) and the Directorate General of Taxes (Dgi) have resolutely buried the hatchet, with the arrival at the head of the Cameroonian tax administration of a new boss. The heads of the two institutions seem to be looking in the same direction for an improvement in the business climate, and the days of bickering between the two administrations are over.
