The development of the labor market – Switzerland is running out of craftsmen

Michael Siegenthaler monitors the Swiss labor market for the ETH Center for Economic Research. He explains why Switzerland is running out of craftsmen.

SRF NEWS: Why do fewer and fewer people want to pursue skilled trades?

Michael Siegenthaler: There are many reasons for that. The importance of business and construction has declined; we have become a knowledge and service economy. Relatively speaking, skilled trades are not as important here anymore.

Don’t want to get your hands dirty anymore?

It is certainly true that many people want to pursue an academic career. Working as a craftsman is no longer so attractive. However, it must be said that not all professors fight equally for young talent and employees. The painters, for example, have turned things around.

How come?

They managed to integrate a growing group – namely women – and appeal to them.

What does this mean for the dual education system?

The desire for academic education continues to grow, including from parents. This puts some areas under pressure.
