And do not expect any news this year, despite what was previously promised.

We have not seen much from Final Fantasy XVI then it was announced in September 2020. They have previously says that the game is basically finished and that it is mostly side quests and general trimming that is on the to-do list. Producer Naoki Yoshida also promised that we would get more info about the game in 2021.
That will not be the case, however, because in a Twitter post he writes that the pandemic forced them to let many work from home, which led to the game’s development being “delayed by almost six months”. However, he says that during the year they worked hard to minimize the impact from this, so that they can focus fully on, among other things, improving and optimizing the graphics, refining the combat mechanics, further developing specific battles and completing intermediate sequences.
More information about the game will instead come in the spring of 2022, when they want to “start getting people playing before the game’s release”. We do not have a nailed-down release date, but it has been rumored about June 2022. However, this should be taken with a pinch of salt, especially considering that the development is now a little behind.
