The developer behind Mima wants to leave Molenbeek: ‘No progress’

Le Chien Vert was sold to the original owner two years ago, so the hotel will not be built. Jean-Paul Pütz still owns the commercial buildings behind Le Phare du Kanaal and the Lulu furniture store, two old warehouses of that clothing store.

“But I want to sell them both soon. And I don’t expect much profit. Of course I earn rent from the operators, but they are not commensurate with the investment I have made. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It’s not what the next owner will do with my business anymore.”

Nine years

According to Pütz, a new Mima next to the canal is out of the question in his own buildings, partly because they are too small. The management of the museum says that a new place will be sought first in the center of the city.

“Best between Place Royale and the Bourse,” said chairman Michel de Launoit. “Road works on the Henegouwenkaai will last two years and we will lose up to 20,000 euros in income every month it does not support us with subsidies.” The museum is looking for around 200,000 to 250,000 euros as support, he feels.

However, the question arises whether road works are the only subject for the closure. When the Mima opened in 2016, it was known that the museum had a nine-year lease with the Nelson Group. This was said by Michel de Launoit and Jean-Paul Pütz in interviews at the time, including with the weekly magazine The Snitch.

Two years ago, the management of the museum announced a permanent closure in 2026, in a answer to a luxury magazine The Fan. “From the beginning of our project, we were determined to reevaluate ourselves in ten years. If we couldn’t stay relevant, we would close. We feel it is necessary to announce this date to the public,” management said at the time.
