The Devastating Impact of Myanmar Military Coup Continues More Than Two Years Later | Indiablooms

The UN Special Envoy has reported to the General Assembly that violence resulting from Myanmar’s military coup is continuing on an “alarming scale” into its third year. The military has extended its state of emergency and increased the use of force, including aerial bombing and burning civilian homes. The spread of martial law and empowering citizens deemed loyal to the regime has resulted in widespread atrocities and violence in ethnic areas. Despite this, widespread resistance continues in Myanmar by any means possible. The conflict has resulted in 17.6 million Burmese needing humanitarian assistance, more than 1.6 million internally displaced, and an estimated 55,000 civilian buildings destroyed since the coup. Sustainable solutions for the Rohingya people must be built into the design of a peaceful, inclusive and democratic Myanmar. The UN Special Envoy urges Members States to support the 2023 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis, which stands at $876 million.
