Everyone has in mind a date that has changed their life. For better or worse. Celia Piquer’s is March 29, 2021. That day out of responsibility, and also out of solidarity, she was vaccinated against covid. Due to her status as a veterinarian (an essential profession) she did it a few weeks before what would have corresponded to her according to her age group, but what she could never imagine is that that puncture from AstraZeneca was going to ruin her life. “ANDor I was a superactive person, who loved my profession and today I am totally dependent. I need help for everything.” explains this 47-year-old veterinarian who for years developed her activity in a clinic in Almassora and since she became ill, she has been forced to return to her parents’ house.

Although the vast majority of the more than 41 million people in Spain who received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine did not suffer significant adverse effects (beyond a little fever and general malaise), there are others to whom that dose has left sequelae for life. Celia is one of them. Núria Tabares is another. And Avel.lí Pastor. all are from Castellon. They are all affected by the covid vaccines and, together with other victims, are part of an association (APAVaC19) that seeks to make visible the situation in which they find themselves, create specific units in hospitals public to diagnose and investigate these diseases and recognize their work disabilities.
“We are not anti-vaccination or denialists. We are just people who, as a result of the injection, have developed a serious illness. And what we want is to be heard,” they agree.
APAVaC19 was established as an association last February and, although it is national in nature, most of its members are from Castellón and Valencia. “In the Community is where there are more cases,” says Marta Belenguer, spokesperson and diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia as a result of the vaccine.
Eight out of ten are women
Like Marta, Celia or Núria, 83% of the people affected by the injection against the coronavirus are women and to a vast majority in Health they do not recognize vaccination as the fact that has caused the disease. “Some of us do have it officially verified, but the bulk does not,” Belenguer explains to this newspaper.
Celia is one of the few patients who has recognized that the cause of her illness is the dose of AstraZeneca she received. In her case, the ordeal began fifteen days after receiving the puncture. “As soon as I got vaccinated, I began with episodes of weakness, tremors, extreme fatigue, very intense headaches and bleeding gums,” he says. The worst, however, came on April 15, on the way to the job. «I began to feel very bad, with extreme weakness, without the strength to walk. I don’t even remember how I got to the clinic. The companions found me sitting in an armchair, unable to speak, or open my eyes, or move, “she describes. “That day my life stopped dead,” she says.
After her visit to the ER, Celia’s health continued to deteriorate and her day-to-day life became a nightmare. Even today, more than two years later, he is feeling worse and worse and needs a wheelchair to get out.. “I have more than 50 symptoms. I present episodes of cataplexy-paralysis-extreme weakness that leave me immobile for two or three hours, cognitive deterioration that leads me to suffer mental crashes. I have lost vision and hearing, I have developed an intolerance to some foods y medicines…», narrates this woman who has been diagnosed with severe post-covid vaccine myalgic encephalomyelitis.
The administration, another ordeal
For Celia, Marta and others affected by the vaccines, that puncture has ruined their health but, in addition, they have had to deal with an administrative bureaucracy that has always made it very difficult for them. «Despite all the medical reports, they denied me permanent disability. I had to appeal and, finally, they recognized me »says Celia, who assures that if she succeeds it is thanks to the fact that she has “the best parents and friends in the world.”
Those affected demand that the Administration listen to and value them and, for the moment, they have found nothing but barriers. «In March we met with the Ministry of Health to send them our requests, but we are still waiting for a response “. regrets Marta Belenguer.
