Today, the international Olympic movement has degraded, having ceased to meet the main task of uniting people. This was announced today, September 12, by Russian President Vladimir Putin at a plenary meeting of the EEF.
“International sport itself and the Olympic movement are deteriorating. They do not perform their most important functions. After all, the point is not only about setting records, but about uniting people,” Putin said.
The President expressed confidence that “alternative movements will be created in the world one way or another.” This, as the head of state noted, is an “objective process.”
“We will hold the Friendship Games next year. We will hold competitions within the BRICS framework, everyone will be happy to participate in this… This will accordingly kill today’s international structures, they also need to be updated and personnel updated, so it is unfortunate that this is happening. We, of course, will protect our athletes, we will create alternative opportunities for them, including the financial results of their achievements,” Putin said.
He also expressed his attitude towards participating in competitions without a flag and anthem:
“I don’t know if it’s possible to say that, but nevertheless, some say that sport, that is, competition at the international level, is like a sublimation of war. And there is something there. It’s just that for an especially high-class athlete, when he stands on the podium, the anthem of his country sounds and the flag and banner are raised, this also has a certain meaning.”
At the same time, according to Putin, each athlete must independently decide on participation in the Olympic Games:
“Of course, we must first of all be guided by the interests of the athletes in this situation. And each of them, who have been preparing for years, some decades, must make certain decisions for themselves.”
