Ramallah: On Sunday, the Palestine Liberation Organization confirmed that its secretary, Saeb Erekat, who was recently infected with the Coronavirus, had been transferred for treatment in an Israeli hospital after his health deteriorated.
The Organization’s Negotiations Affairs Department said in a brief statement that his transfer for treatment was “due to chronic health problems in his respiratory system” and “because his condition requires special medical care and oversight.”
His brother Saber Erekat told AFP that his brother’s condition “is not good and he suffers from general weakness and lack of oxygen.”
He confirmed his transfer to the “Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva” inside Israel.
And the Jordanian King Abdullah II had given instructions to provide the necessary medical care to Erekat in Jordanian hospitals in case the need to do so.
Erekat, 65, who suffers from pulmonary fibrosis, underwent a lung transplant in a hospital in the United States in 2017 before resuming his activities.
Erekat holds the position of Secretary of the Palestine Liberation Organization and is close to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and has participated in several negotiations to try to settle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and in recent weeks, he has intensified statements opposing the normalization of relations between Israel and Gulf countries in the absence of a peace agreement between the Palestinians and the Hebrew state.
As of Sunday, the occupied West Bank had recorded 42,490 cases of the virus, and 381 deaths.
