The Detective Who Found Stolen Van Gogh Painting: Brando’s Home and Art Recovery

In both cases, someone delivered the stolen works to Brando’s home, AFP wrote. The detective benefits from the fact that his name is known and that he often appears in the media when a stolen image is found.

At the beginning of September, she reported a lot about van Gogh’s early painting, which someone brought to the doorstep of Brando’s apartment. The work, worth three to six million euros (74 to 148 million crowns), disappeared from the museum in Laren three years ago, and although the thief was caught and convicted, the painting remained missing.

This time, Brand was said to be quietly watching a football game at home when someone rang him and asked for help with packing. The cargo turned out to be stolen paintings from Medemblik. Although these have a much lower financial value than the returned van Gogh (around 100 thousand euros, i.e. almost 2.5 million crowns), the owner values them, among other things, because among them is the oldest known depiction of the Frisian king Radbod, who lived in the 7 .century.

It’s the Two Laughing Boys’ turn

Already after the theft in Medemblik, Brand told the thieves that they had better steal the bikes, because they could be sold, while it is almost impossible to do so with well-known paintings. “In some cases, thieves burn paintings to get rid of evidence when they can’t sell them. So I am very grateful that they decided to do the right thing. Stealing is bad, but if you give it back, you can make things right,” Brand said.

Now Arthur Brand is focusing his search on Frans Hals’ painting Two Laughing Boys (1627), worth 16 million euros (397 million crowns), which disappeared from a small museum in Leerdam in 2020. The same man who also stole van Gogh’s work was convicted of theft in 2021.
