British police have arrested a second suspect for felling a famous tree in Northumberland, northern England. In addition to a sixteen-year-old boy, a man in his 60s was also arrested.
The man is still in custody. The sixteen-year-old boy has been released on bail.
“The senseless destruction of what was undoubtedly a world-famous landmark, and a local treasure, has rightly led to expressions of shock, horror and anger across the North East and beyond,” police officer Rebecca Fenney-Menzies said. “I hope this second arrest shows how seriously we take this situation.”
It is unclear why the tree was cut down. It is also not known what role the older suspect played. The BBC reports that forensic research has been carried out on the tree. “In my 31 years of investigating traces, I have never investigated a tree,” said one of the police officers.
The tree known as the Sycamore Gap Tree or Robin Hood’s tree was cut down on Wednesday night. The plane tree was probably about three hundred years old and healthy. It was known for its enchanting location between two hills next to Hadrian’s Wall, and was featured in a 1991 film about Robin Hood.
