The designer Stédo faced with the lack of recognition of the 9th (…)

FIGHT OF CASES. Belgian cartoonist Stédo, whose real name is Stéphane Dauvin, can provide direct proof of a still striking lack of recognition for comics. On his Facebook account, he testifies, with supporting evidence, of the gap that remains between the champions of the 9th Art, accomplished for a long time, and those who see in it only entertainment quickly consumed and thrown away for children.

Yep, it seems that there are still some people who still have a childish vision of the comic book album, a worthless object that would quickly be drawn, quickly read, and relegated to dusty shelves. On his Facebook account, Stédo, designer among others of the series Firefighters (Bamboo) et Isidore Garage (Dupuis), made the observation.

While he delivers to the winner of a competition original boards, which nevertheless represent two days of labor and a value of € 300, his interlocutor is scandalized not to receive the comic strip from which the boards are drawn… BD which , we remind you, can be bought in supermarkets for 10 €. Skeptical, the winner of the competition even proposed to question a friend who was a designer on the real value of the boards, described as “foil.[s] cardboard ”of which we“ cannot do much ”.

The anecdote would make you smile if it were taken straight from a Stédo album caricaturing the profession. But no, it is true and above all it reveals a serious ignorance of the hard work provided by its authors and of the effort, however visible, to offer varied and detailed content, which is aimed at children, teenagers as well as adults. The pictures still have beautiful remains.
