After several years in the video game industry, Galyonkin gained Internet fame in 2015 as the creator of the website SteamSpy, which made it possible to estimate useful information such as playing time and game sales on Valve’s PC platform by collecting user profile data.

This information was particularly useful for Epic Games, which hired Galyonkin as head of publishing for Eastern Europe in 2016. He soon became director of release strategy and helped the Unreal developer launch its own download platform, the Epic Games Store, in 2018, relying on some data from SteamSpy. That same year, Valve updated its privacy settings, making the data on which SteamSpy relied impossible to access.
Galyonkin’s departure
Galyonkin announced on Twitter today, October 2, that it was his last day at Epic and thanked his former colleagues and Tim Sweeney for their support in building Epic 4.0. He also said: “Epic Games is becoming a platform – Epic 5.0 – and I am not suitable for this new version of Epic; it requires people of a different type.”
Galyonkin was also present at the launch of Fortnite in 2017, which he said “became one of those self-reinforcing cultural phenomena I talked about a year earlier” by proving that “free-to-play without pay -to-Win can work”. on a large scale.”
Galyonkin expressed his gratitude for Epic Games’ $144 million donation to support charities in Ukraine after the Russian invasion, stating, “It means a lot to me and I will be forever grateful.” He confirmed that he will remain in the gaming industry and hopes to become more vocal now that he no longer has to worry about PR requirements.
Galyonkin did not confirm whether his departure was related to Epic’s recent announcement that it would lay off more than 800 employees due to high investments and lower-than-expected Fortnite revenue.
