The Department of Transportation (DOTr) in the Philippines requires PHP1.45bn ($28m) in funding to install platform barriers in stations along the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT). The request follows the death of a woman who jumped in front of an MRT train at Quezon Avenue Station last week. The barriers are a safety measure designed to prevent accidents by keeping passengers away from the train tracks as it approaches the platform. Jorjette Aquino, assistant secretary for railways and acting officer for MRT3, said the platform barriers had previously been proposed but had not been funded due to budgetary constraints.
