The Department of State’s Sports Visitor program took sports diplomacy to new heights during a recent STEM, basketball, and soccer youth exchange in Boston, Aug. 5-19. Students from Cyprus, Peru, Belgium, Hong Kong, Japan, and The Gambia engaged with peers on and off the pitch and court, challenging stereotypes and broadening their understanding of diversity, inclusion, and democratic values. Part of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Exchange Programs, Sports Visitors are young non-elite athletes and coaches chosen by U.S. missions overseas to travel to the United States for a fast-paced two week exchange program. These sports-themed programs offer participants the opportunity to interact with Americans and experience American society, culture, and values firsthand.
