What there is to know

The images of violence and acts of vandalism are still in our memories … Last Saturday, the Parisian demonstration of December 5 against the proposed law “global security” had been punctuated by numerous incidents. Thugs had smashed many windows in the twentieth arrondissement, including banks and real estate agencies. Nationally, 67 police and gendarmes were injured. The police had made 95 arrests.

This is why multiple organizations, activists and unions, believing that the security conditions were not sufficient, called for a new mobilization this Saturday in the regions (Lyon, Dijon, Nancy, Montpellier, Toulouse, Lille, Nantes, Caen, Tours, Nancy …) excluding a walk in the capital.

A decision supported in particular by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France insoumise: “The insecurity created by Lallement, Alliance and Black Bloc no longer makes it possible to demonstrate peacefully. The enemies of freedom and Macron score a point” a-t- he tweeted on Friday.

However, several opposition movements have still decided to meet at Place du Châtelet, in the center of Paris, a very commercial district which should be crowded on this penultimate Saturday before Christmas.

On the route of the procession, which should set off around 2:30 p.m. towards Place de la République, there are many shops. Already very affected by the health and economic crisis, several of them decided to lower the curtain at midday in order to avoid being targeted.
