The Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro suffered a crushing defeat

The Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS), led by the head of state Milo Djukanovic, according to preliminary results, suffered a crushing defeat in local elections in Montenegro. Three decades later, the DPS will be removed from power everywhere in Montenegro.

On Sunday, 14 out of 25 municipalities held municipal elections. Montenegro’s public television reported on Monday 24 October that the capital is definitely lost to the socialists. Although the party received the most votes here, the coalition parties that won the 2020 elections together also received more votes than the DPS, so they can lead the Podgorica Metropolitan Municipality. The socialists only managed to take control in three of the 14 municipalities.

political analyst Milo Besic he told public television that Milo Djukanovic did not understand the message sent to him by the citizens when they voted for the opposition in 2020, further weakening his party’s power and influence.

Government of Montenegro, headed by Dritan Abazovicit failed the confidence vote in August and will only act as an interim government until the domestic political crisis subsides.

To resolve the situation, the head of state, Milo Djukanovic, proposed to reduce the term of office of the parliament and to hold early elections. In response, some parliamentary parties have initiated the recall of the President of the Republic. The outcome of the internal political crisis or of the political struggle is still unpredictable. Milo Djukanovic also announced that if the legislature did not dissolve voluntarily, he would dissolve it himself by presidential decree, as the constitution allows it. According to the parliamentarians who initiated the removal of the president, the head of state thus wants to take every opportunity to remain in power, since the Democratic Party of Socialists led by him, which previously ruled the country for three decades, has lost in the 2020 elections.

Milo Djukanovic’s presidential term expires next spring. His re-election seems problematic.
