The Democratic Party of Korea’s General Election Planning Team Controversy: Pro-Myung Faction Protest and Non-Myung Faction’s Concerns

The Democratic Party of Korea announced the launch of a ‘general election planning team’ on the 1st and appointed five-term pro-Lee Jae-myung (pro-Myung) secretary-general Cho Jung-sik as the head of the planning team. The Non-Myung faction, which had called for Secretary General Cho’s resignation due to the controversy over the biased nomination, protested against the selection of pro-Myung faction members, saying, “It is not a general election planning team, but a pro-Myung Planning Group.” Among the 13 members of the general election planning team, including Secretary General Cho, only two have a light factionalism.

The general election planning team announced by the Democratic Party on this day included Secretary General Cho (Director), Jeong Tae-ho, Director of the Institute for Democracy, Kim Seong-joo, Senior Vice-Chairman of the Policy Committee, Strategic Planning Committee Chairman Byeong-do Han, Vice Secretary-General Kim Byeong-ki, National Women’s Committee Chairman Lee Jae-jeong, National Youth Committee Chairman Jeon Yong-ki, and Public Relations and Communication Committee Chairman Han Joon-ho. They are women, youth, and outsiders, including relevant lawmakers, Rep. Shin Hyun-young, Democratic Party Busan Regional Committee Chairman Choi Taek-yong, Youth Future Joint Committee Vice-Chairman Park Young-hoon, Attorney Jang Hyun-joo, and Jang Yun-mi. The Democratic Party plans to appoint two additional members in the future. Among them, Jeong Tae-ho, director of the Institute for Democracy, and Han Byeong-do, chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee, both former members of the Moon Jae-in administration’s Blue House, are slightly pro-Myung. People outside the hospital are also categorized as pro-pro-lifers who have appeared on YouTube with a tendency to be ‘doggy’ or have revealed their support for Lee Jae-myung.

A leading member of the non-religious community told this newspaper, “Contrary to Representative Lee’s message of ‘integration,’ the transformation of Lee Jae-myeong into a partisan leader is almost complete.” Rep. Lee Won-wook, who has argued that “a member of the neutral zone should serve as secretary-general,” protested on Facebook on this day, saying, “It is not a general election planning group, but a pro-Myung planning group.”

An official from the party leadership said, “The general election planning team is not in a position to control nominations,” and added, “The secretive groups are raising concerns on their own.” Floor leader Hong Ik-pyo said on the radio this morning, “(Political newcomers who are concerned about being nominated as an assassin) are developing themselves by showing that they are close to Representative Lee. He also claimed, “There are no people at all related to Representative Lee Jae-myung.” However, one non-member lawmaker said, “Special advisor to the party leader, Kang Wi-won, who is considered Representative Lee’s ‘guardian’ in the non-member constituency of Rep. Song Gap-seok and has been with Representative Lee since his days as governor of Gyeonggi Province, is preparing to run, but even the floor leader has stepped forward and said, ‘He is not involved at all.’ He said, “I have more doubts about it since you covered it up with the statement.”
