Liene Jakovleva met with the conductor and the head of the Department of Music Pedagogy of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music Edgars Vītols. Celebrating the 60th birthday of the department, the prestige of the teaching profession, the role of music in the path of a young person and the School Youth Song and Dance Festival, which is still unknown, were discussed.

The Department of Music Pedagogy was founded in 1961. Their leaders were notable conductors, teachers and musicologists – Ludvigs Kārkliņš, Imants Cepītis, Pauls Kvelde, Jānis Zirnis, Laima Lasmane, Arvīds Platpers, Ilma Grauzdiņa, Liene Batņa and Edgars Vītols. In 60 years, almost a thousand music teachers have been trained, who implement general, professional and interest education in music throughout Latvia.

May 5 at At 15.00 in a special online event “Tomorrow starts yesterday” or the sustainability of the tradition of music pedagogy, today’s lecturers and students will meet students, graduates, teachers and other interested people. The event will be broadcast live on the JVLMA Youtube channel.

During the remote meeting, the history of the department, its current activities and future plans will be discussed. The lecturers of the department will give their vision of the study process and innovations in the content in a kaleidoscope of questions, while students will present a musical-rhythmic collage of remote study time and share their experience of studies in today’s music teacher program. Together, the pages of the history of the department will be flipped through and the most significant achievements will be highlighted. The versatility, significance and topicality of the music teaching profession today will be introduced.
