Aleksandra Mihailidi-Antonovska, senior zoologist in the Department of Mammals of the Riga Zoo, said that the festive event includes maple leaves, garlic, two types of pellets, celery and other ingredients, according to the taste of giraffes. The zoo admits that it is difficult to maintain these beautiful animals.
“Giraffes are herbivores. This means that in captivity it is very difficult to provide all the leaves they would eat in the wild. In the wild outside, they eat 10 hours a day. It is very challenging for a human to reproduce this in a zoo.
In Riga Zoo, the giraffes’ basic food is leafy willow branches, which they can eat as much as they want. The daily portion also includes protein-rich alfalfa hay. And a strengthening portion of food from two types of special pellets.
Vakilia came to Riga from Austria three years ago, and Chuck left Denmark last year. Chuck will celebrate his third birthday in September. The two look alike, and in a year or two the couple could expect a baby giraffe. These are Rothschild’s giraffes, and there are less than 1,500 individuals left in Africa. Poaching and human economic activity continue to reduce the number of giraffes in the country. They are included in the Red Book of the World.
