Numerous fans rioted in central Brussels after the national team Belgium lost to Morocco. The police fired tear gas.
Reported AFP extension, on Monday (11/28/2022), dozens of fans smashed shop windows and set off fireworks. Several vehicles were burned.
Before the match ended, “dozens of people, including some in hooded clothes, also tried to confront the police, endangering public safety,” Brussels police said in a statement.
Some fans were armed with sticks. A reporter was reportedly injured in the face by the fireworks.
100 police officers were deployed. Metro stations have been closed and some roads have been blocked.
“I strongly condemn this afternoon’s incident. The police intervened decisively. I therefore advise fans not to go to the city centre. The police are doing everything they can to maintain public order,” the mayor of Brussels tweeted. Philippe Tutup.
“I ordered the police to arrest the troublemakers,” he continued.
