Latvian boxer Mairis Briedis won the Cuban Junier Dorticos in the final of the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) in Munich on Saturday and won the Muhammad Ali trophy, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion belt and The Ring magazine belt.
The first round was spent in intelligence, with Dortikos in the center and forcing Latvian boxers to the ropes a couple of times.
The Cuban was also more active in the second round, when Briedis responded with dangerous counterattacks. If they did not meet, the Latvian boxer went to the clinic.
The boxers “exploded” in the middle and at the end of the third round, repeatedly hitting good shots for Briedis.
In the fourth and fifth rounds, Dortikos continued to dominate in the middle of the ring, with Briedis counterattacking.
At the end of the sixth round, Briedis hit the right with the right, but the sequel did not follow. After the round, the Deer Secondary directly indicated that a series of multi-strokes was needed.
In the seventh round, three good blows were scored by the Latvian boxer, but in the eighth round, the Cuban responded with several good blows.
In the ninth round, Briedis looked better, who not only hit well, but also excellently avoided Dortikos’ strong blow to the spices.
Immediately after leaving the ropes, the Latvian hit well several times, while Dortikos succumbed to several blows in the hull.
In the penultimate round, both hiters made several good shots, taking the initiative of Briedis, who had previously scored more points for the opponent, while the “slaughtered doctor” tried to finish the fight with one blow.
Briedis was also more active in the last round, and the spectators did not see the fight killed.
The judges rated Briedis in favor: 117: 111, 117: 111 and 114: 114.
“Everything happened as a dream. There was a lack of fans, but hopefully you are satisfied,” Briedis said in the ring after the fight, adding that this is again the moment when Latvia has been given the eagle’s wings.
After receiving two champion belts and the Muhammad Ali Award, the Latvian boxer tried the Ali Cup test with his teeth, adding that it is like biting into an Olympic medal.
Initially, the fight was planned for March 21 in Riga, but due to the rapid spread of the pandemic, it was postponed to May 16. Later, the fight planned for May 16 was canceled, but this week it turned out that both boxers will fight for the victory in the tournament in Munich on September 26.
The duel took place in the Plazamedia Broadcasting Center television studio, but the audience could not watch the fight in person.
The IBF belt became vacant after Oleksandr Usik moved to heavyweight and was won by Dorticos in the WBSS semi-final, who killed Andrew Tabiti. The Ring, on the other hand, was vacant before the fight.
In the “Ring” version, Deer and Dorticos take the first two places in the list of the best boxers in this weight category.
The most prestigious World Boxing Council (WBC) belt is currently owned by Congolese boxer Ilung Makabu, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) belt is vacant, and the World Boxing Association (WBA) champion is currently Frenchman Arsen Gularmirjan.
The 35-year-old Briedis had won 26 victories in his professional boxing career before the fight in Munich, 19 of whom were killed and had suffered one loss in the first season semi-final of the WBSS in Riga against Ukrainian Oleksandr Usik.
The youngest Cuban boxer of the year, Dorticos, had won 24, only two of whom were forced to take all the rounds in the ring, and also suffered one loss – a week after the deer lost to Usik, the Cuban in Sochi lost to Murat Gasij in the second WBSS semifinals.
Both semi-final fights of this season’s super series took place on June 15, 2019 in Riga. Dorticos first made it to the finals after success over US boxer Andrew Tabiti, but soon after, Briedis defeated Krzysztof Glovacki from Poland in a scandalous fight.
