The Deeper Meaning Behind Selfies: A Study on Third-Person Perspective Photos

95 million photos are uploaded to Instagram every day. Many of them are self-portraits.

Why do people take selfies? Contrary to popular belief, a study has found that taking selfies is not just about showing off yourself.

Researchers at Ohio State University in the US found that common first-person perspective photos, such as landscapes, and third-person view photos, such as self-portrait selfies, mean different things to people.

The results of this study were published in an academic journal It was recently published in Social Psychological and Personality Science..

In general, first-person photos are considered to reveal the actual experience of the place or event where the photo was taken, and third-person photos, such as selfies, better reveal the deeper meaning of the experience.

As a result of the research team’s survey of 2,113 people, it was found that people actually take advantage of these characteristics to take pictures according to their own purposes.

People with a strong desire to capture meaning in their experiences were more likely to take third-person selfies. In addition, when viewing photos of themselves, it was found that they remembered the meaning of the experience better than when viewing general first-person photos. Users rated the photo with the selected viewpoint as their preferred photo for each purpose of experience and meaning.

While studies on selfies so far have mainly focused on how the person taking the picture reveals themselves, this study is characterized by targeting those who want to look back on the experience at the time.

Dr. Zachary Nice of the University of Tübingen, the first author of the thesis, said, “There is no superiority or inferiority between first-person and third-person perspective photos. The shape is decided,” he said. “The act of taking pictures can contribute to an important human motivation to increase our understanding of ourselves in terms of life experience and meaning,” he said.
