The Decrease in Hay Fever Cases: Latest Figures and Pollen Measurements

The number of people who go to the doctor with serious hay fever complaints has decreased again in recent weeks, after a sharp peak at the beginning of June. At that time, GPs saw more than 500 patients with hay fever complaints per 100,000 inhabitants. According to the latest figures from health institute Nivel, that number has decreased to just over 100 consultations per 100,000 inhabitants in the past week.

Pollen measurements also show that the air now contains a lot less pollen from grasses than a few weeks ago. The measurement of the Elkerliek Hospital in Helmond shows about a halving compared to the peak on June 9. Even then, the concentrations are relatively high.

The amount of pollen in the air is highly dependent on the weather. When it is dry and sunny, with some wind, people who are sensitive to it often suffer the most from complaints. They have to sneeze a lot and some also suffer from itchy eyes, fatigue and concentration problems.

Hay fever is actually a somewhat misleading term, because it is not specifically caused by hay and is not a form of fever. The correct medical term is allergic rhinitis.
