The Decline of Valencia CF: A Look at the Club’s Struggles in Spanish Football and Europe Under Peter Lim’s Ownership

A Valencia CF in decline and less and less a protagonist in Spanish football and further away from Europe. That is the Christmas gift that Peter Lim has accustomed to Valencianism, especially since in the second half of 2019 he dispensed with the duo that had led him to two consecutive editions of the Champions League: Marcelino García and Mateu Alemany. The Meriton League, the balance of the 352 days of the Spanish league played since the Singaporean closed the purchase of the majority shareholding, clearly shows both the belittlement to which Jorge Mendes’ partner has subjected the club and the lies with those that were opened among the fans at the hands of former president Amadeo Salvo.

The facts have nothing to do with that false promise of a Valencia, eager to bid with Madrid and Barça, which would settle in the Champions League and would not sell its best players. Today, almost ten years later, those from Mestalla are on their way to 1,400 days without setting foot on UEFA territory, while at the same time they have disappeared from the noble part of the League. A decrease that represents a reduction in income and loss of value of the workforce.

SUPER makes a temporary cut just on the day Lim entered Mestalla for the first time, feted by thousands of followers. On Saturday, October 25, 2014, hours after the purchase and sale was signed on the night of the 24th, the team, coached by Nuno, beat Elche (3-1). Since then, Valencia has competed for a total of 1,056 points in the League, leaving 53% behind. Between matchday 9 of the 2014/15 campaign and matchday 18 of the current one, Valencia has 493 points. Being, at that time and in practice, the team with the worst performance of all among the League classics. The numbers portray the inability of Meriton’s management. In these more than nine years, nine entities have resisted in the highest category. And of all of them, only Celta has fewer points than Valencia. Likewise, Betis (449), promoted in May 2015, has a higher score than the Valencians (433) since the 15/16 season.

Sevilla, Villarreal, Real Sociedad and Athletic, lower in the competition’s history, have taken advantage of the Lim era to close the gap with the Valencians. In fact, the lions threaten the fourth historic square. If the regularity tournament had not stopped since the arrival of the Asian, Valencia would be 300 points behind the leader… a difference that, without the campaigns of Nuno and Marcelino in 2015, 2018 and 2019, would be even more dramatic.

In January 2016, Atlético took the ‘bypass’ in the historical classification. With Lim, the red and whites have added 231 more points than Valencia, earning 440 million more in Europe. A period in which Sevilla obtained 85 more points and 205 million from UEFA. The decline worsened in 2023, where relegation was flirted with and 12 teams added more points than the 46 of the black and whites.
