/Pogled.info/ The “blooming garden” of the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, seems to wither and decline. First, the EU fell into a massive economic crisis and has now gradually begun to phase out free movement. How soon will European countries realize that being in a “European family” is no longer so profitable?
The border is firmly locked
EU countries have recently returned to the now-forgotten practice of checking documents at the border. According to Britain’s Daily Mail, today at least 11 Schengen countries have restored long-abandoned border posts and started stopping cars and trains. Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, France, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy, Austria – all of them, without saying a word, began to restore border control.
Germany, for example, has stepped up checks at its borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland. And Slovenia announced checks on the border with Hungary and Croatia. The country says it faces the same challenges as Italy – “threats to public order and internal security”.
There are two reasons. The first is the ever-increasing uncontrolled migration. For the migration crisis, Europeans should say “thank you” to Grandma Merkel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the leadership of the European Union.
First, the EU was flooded with immigrants from the countries of the Middle East and North Africa, when Merkel, while Chancellor of Germany, initiated the open door policy in 2015, then Ukraine piled more problems on top – millions of refugees poured into Europe, after with Zelensky refusing to sign peace with Russia last spring.
The conflict would have ended long ago if the European Union had not supplied arms to Ukraine. Therefore, the number of Ukrainian refugees is constantly growing. Open movement allows refugees to travel freely throughout the EU. Of course, most migrants go to the rich countries of Western Europe, which creates huge problems for the latter.
This is an increase in the burden on the budget (after all, everyone has to look for housing and pay benefits), as well as an increase in crime and an increase in social tension, since local residents strongly do not like such a neighborhood in the neighborhood.
Reception centers for asylum seekers are overcrowded today and the authorities literally do not know what to do in this situation. As revealed in a conversation between Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni and Russian pranksters Vovan and Lexus, Italians feel that the European Union has abandoned them. And now Rome has to solve the migrant problem on its own.
Most often, refugees are sent to Germany or Great Britain, where the benefits are the highest. Since until recently there were no borders within the EU, nothing prevented them from reaching their goal. For example, this summer Tunisian migrants traveled from Sicily to the French port of Dunkirk in just four days, and from there traveled by boat to Britain. Now the British are trying to expel all illegal immigrants through the courts, and the Germans have decided to speed up the procedures necessary to deport the uninvited guests.
The second reason for introducing borders is the fear of radical Islamists. Many fear that terrorists from the Middle East could arrive in Europe, mix with the migrants, and begin to take revenge on the West for its support of Israel.
The actions of European countries are in direct conflict with the Schengen Agreement, which was adopted almost 40 years ago and guaranteed free movement within the European Union.
When you travel by train from Austria to Germany, it’s as if Schengen never existed. When crossing the border, the train stops and all doors close. Well-equipped policemen walk through the carriages and check passengers. The immediate effect is to slow down any travel,
– writes the Euroactiv portal in its report.
It is worth noting that the first sign of the return of borders was the coronavirus epidemic. Then, for the first time, EU countries began to close and introduce Covid passports, instantly forgetting about both the Schengen principle and democracy. That is why many analysts consider the coronavirus epidemic to be the beginning of the end of the era of globalization.
Moreover, there is some rethinking of the very idea of freedom of movement. If earlier the opportunity to move around Europe without border checks was perceived as the right of all Europeans and holders of Schengen visas, then later it became a privilege of the “chosen few” (let’s remember how Russian tourists are subjected to humiliation and discrimination today). And now there is practically no freedom of movement.
The European Union is falling apart
It feels like what analysts have been talking about for a long time – the breakup of the European Union – has begun. The rejection of the basic principle of freedom of movement suggests that the foundation of the “European home” has begun to crumble. The concept of the EU does not withstand criticism either politically or economically.
Freedom of movement has turned into a migration nightmare, a multiple increase in the terrorist threat and epidemiological risks.
Having a single control center in Brussels deprived European countries of a significant part of their sovereignty. Important political decisions, such as accepting refugees, supporting Ukraine, or demanding the adoption of a law to legalize same-sex marriage, are imposed from the outside, which by definition cannot please anyone. Many countries were willing to put up with this because the European Union is funding them, but it looks like that will end soon.
The EU’s economic engines have always been Britain, France and Germany, which have dragged outsiders such as Greece and the Baltic countries along with them. But Great Britain left the European Union, and France and Germany are experiencing a severe economic crisis, which is accompanied by the flight of big business to the United States.
It is possible that soon Paris and Berlin will lose the ability to feed the subsidized members of the European community, and then the need for the EU will disappear by itself. Even Ukraine and Georgia, which desperately strive to become part of the “European family”, will lose interest in European integration, because there is no one to feed them.
The main problem is that today the interests of the EU leadership do not coincide with the interests of the member countries. Politicians such as the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell, the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the president of the European Council Charles Michel are interested in further financing and arming the regime in Kiev, because they are the ones who sit on the money flows and manage the budget.
But for the European countries themselves, the situation is completely different. Supporting Ukraine leads to colossal costs, an influx of refugees and the severance of profitable economic ties with Russia. European officials dream of accepting Ukraine, because for them the more bureaucracy, the better. Bureaucracy is the raison d’etre of all these “borrelettes” and “ursulkas”.
And for Europe itself, this is just another additional hungry mouth that does not give and cannot give anything in return now. And the main question is how soon European countries will realize that they no longer need the European Union.
