More than 10 years ago, it was already clear where the development was going. Over the past forty years, original themes and original films have practically disappeared from cinemas. But with the advent of comics from Marvel, other works of Star Wars, Harry Potter and other successful series, Hollywood did not look at it. If you look at history, in the last 20 years the only original movie to win movie of the year was Avatar in 2010. Since then – nothing big.
The number of original films among the most visited gradually dropped to zero
Of course, film producers bet on the safe side and produce films for which they are sure of earning, because the film industry is primarily a business. Even the viewer apparently goes more often to the second, third… seventh, eighth installment of the film. So if we complain that it’s always the same in cinemas, it’s not just an appearance.
Only covid broke this trend. If we look at the year 2019 (the last year when people went to the cinema normally), yes the first original film was a horror movie in the US My already the twelfth place and on the eighteenth That Time in Hollywood by Tarantino. Otherwise, they are just sequels or remakes of older films.
This year’s mega losers
But Covid interrupted this successful streak. It was expected that people would storm the theaters after the reopening, but it didn’t happen. Sales are high, but not enough. Achievements of the second Avatara (worldwide sales 2.3 billion) a Ball Day (1.5 billion) look nice, but behind them are a lot of expensive films that were not so successful (Black Adam, Thor: Love Like Thunder, Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secret, etc.).
And this year it continues. A movie Mission: Impossible Odplata barely paid the cost Indiana Jones and the Tool of Fate not even that anymore – just like Flash, it literally collapsed with a loss of up to 200 million dollars. Each of these films cost an estimated $300 million. Proof that a high budget is no guarantee of success is the most expensive Czech film Jan Žižka – cost 20 million dollars, worldwide sales were 4.4 million.
It is worth noting that this year (in 2023) the two most successful titles are by a wide margin of hundreds of millions of dollars – Super Mario Bros. in the movie a Barbie. Original movies with relatively low budgets around $100 million. Nolan’s original Oppenheimer with a budget of 100 million, he has already earned 660 million. That people would finally appreciate that someone made something other than a sequel?
They don’t go to Oscar movies anymore
It is also worth noting that in recent years, the so-called Oscar films, i.e. those awarded by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, have stopped going to cinemas. If we look at titles from the nineties and the turn of the millennium, we find hits like Pure Soul, Chicago, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, Titanic, Forest Gump and more.
But who among you knows the movies? In the Rhythm of the Heart, Land of Nomads, Green Book, Spotlightor Moonlight? These are all Oscar winners with the title of best film of the year. In the more recently awarded films (in secondary categories) you will also find better known ones La La Land, Gravityor Bohemian Rhapsodybut the overwhelming majority of awards went to commercially and audience-failed films.
The gulf between the tastes of viewers and critics seems to have widened.
Independent low-budget films are also made, but apart from film enthusiasts and festivals, no one knows about them.
Netflix bets on independent production, but mainly for profit
The last decade has been influenced by the creation of streaming services, especially Netflix. Here you will find cheaper and successful work, especially serial work. South Korean series Squid Game, French crime drama Lupin, Spanish hit Paper House, South American series Narcos, German Dark, Israeli action drama Fauda.
Netflix is different, you might say. It isn’t. For him, this work is just cheaper than the Hollywood one, and when the title is successful, the creators don’t get anything extra. For example, the South Korean series Squid Game cost Netflix $21.4 million, but made $890 million! The creator of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, did not see an extra dollar from the money earned.
After all, this is one of the reasons why contemporary Hollywood is on strike. Streaming platforms do not pay profit shares.
Some films age more, others less
Here at AVmania.cz I make movie selections and tips on what to watch. Sometimes I get criticized for why on earth I bring up such old digs (for a lot of younger people, anything before the year 2000 is kind of prehistoric). But the above-mentioned list proves me to be right, that many older titles are far more watchable and more successful than new works. And it also applies to Czech films.
Sure, not everything ages equally well. Some films become outdated in every way, but others still represent a bet on quality and are mostly at least interesting. Many of them are considered controversial and you won’t find them on streaming services. Damage.
We’ll see how it goes. Marvel’s cinematic comic kingdom is falling fast, DC isn’t much better. Film series that had their sequels in cinemas this year no longer fulfill their purpose – big profit with a minimum of risk. I hope that this year’s impact will be big enough to change the situation and we will return to more original, higher quality, cheaper and at the same time successful production.
